Oleksandr Sirous is a Ukrainian new media artist. He is an active member of the Photinus Studio formation. Having a fully horizontal and unique structure of communication and creating they continue to be involved in the Ukrainian media art. They also organize exhibitions, residencies, and educational events.
He studied painting at the Academy of Arts (2011 - 2014) and graphic arts at the Academy of Arts and Design (2017 - 2018) in Kharkiv.
Oleksandr Sirous works with sound as well as media. He works with big data sets and the principles of interaction and communication in web environments, and moreover creates complex simulation environments using Artificial Intelligence.
The artists background in animation and comics has influenced his practice as he finds non-trivial approaches to storytelling and composition in media works. Recently, he has turned more towards the culture of video games, game mechanics and new rules of interaction. With that he finds new approaches at the intersection of the already established approaches in media art and video games.
His experience in the first month of the war against Ukraine, which he spent in a bomb shelter has changed his artistic practice tremendously. His focus shifted even more towards themes like the centralization and monopolization of intellectual resources. He aims to defend Ukraine's intellectual and cultural integrity and independence from Russian imperialism. Using the tools of new media, he is documenting and deconstructing destructive military actions into an artistic image.
