The exhibition Research NATURE | LIFE at the Schafhof this fall takes up a highly current theme: nature as the basis of human life, its beauty, its transience, its microscopic and macroscopic dimensions. The exhibition presents the new vocabularies of forms and media possibilities that have opened up for art in its appropriation of modern technologies and reflecting on scientific working methods. Also introduced are ideas and content that intersect with scientific-research-based and science-initiated thought processes. The interdependence of art and science is also an essential feature of our experience of life today.

Sustainability, species protection, climate change, energy transition, animal ethics, designer plants and animals, patents on genomes; the list of currently controversial terms discussed is long. Reflecting artistically on these themes is a vital indication of a positioning of a generation of artists that goes beyond aestheticization and which operates in the margins of “social practice.”

Welcoming visitors are the fascinating tableaus of Johann Brandstetter, meti¬culously detailed drawings in the style of Alexander von Humboldt’s flora and fauna of the entire world. Notations add depth to the depictions and give an indication of vital dependencies and symbioses in nature. With and through his art he demands that ecological systems be re-examined as well as the role that humans play therein. Brandstetter is also a successful book illustrator whose latest volume, “Über Leben. Die Wiederentdeckung der Natur” [About Life. The Rediscovery of Nature] will be released in early October. The exhibition presents images from all of the work series appearing in the book.


Death is part of life, an often still terrifying self-evident fact, which is impressively demonstrated in the New York-based Finnish artist Terike Haapoja’s installation Community. Various animals were filmed after their death with a thermal imaging device, the brightly colored photos depict how their energy is gradually release into the surrounding environment. The notion of a world that is deeply rooted in the physicality and co-existence of beings and their multiple lifeworlds is at the core of Haapoja’s politically and ethically driven practice. The installation was pre¬sented in 2013 at the Venice Biennale as a solo exhibition in the Nordic Pavilion.


The work of Australian artists Oron Catts, Ionat Zurr and Tarsh Bates provides a glimpse into the microcosm of nature.The Tissue Culture and Art Project, co funded by Oron Catts and Ionat Zurr started in 1996, is considered one of the leading biological art projects. Crossing Kingdoms; the latest of their projects is an ongoing, interdisciplinary research project that poetically explores the implications of yeast-mammalian cell fusion to form a single hybrid cell. The hybrid cells produced by cross-kingdom fusions challenge our categories and understandings of life. Crossing King¬doms traverses the tangible and con-ceptual borders of life and living systems.


The macrocosm and the depths of time are explored by Austrian-born Helsinki-based artist Erich Berger in his installation Polsprung [Pole Shift]. A reversal in the polarity of the geomagnetic field is called a pole shift, which, according to science, is cyclically and presently long overdue. Starting with (im) possible disasters during a pole shift, a general attempt is made to address threatening scenarios and states of emergency. Erich Berger is the director of the BioArt Society in Helsinki, which also runs an artist-in-residence program in Finland.
