Bernd Zimmer: Natural History(ies)

In the 1980s, early in his career, Bernd Zimmer (b. 1948 in Planegg near Munich) was part of the Junge Wilde movement that injected new energy into painting with its expressive painting style. In recent years he has produced a series of painterly works on nature and natural history concerning the formation of families, species and individual objects. His subjects are not copied or reproduced but are created anew via painting. Here the works not only tell about natural history in a unique visual language but also demonstrate how closely related natural history is to art: the genesis of things in nature (and the formation of families and species) and of objects in art follows similar laws. Or as the founder of modern natural history and modern aesthetics Georges Buffon avers: the principium individuationis of nature and art is the same.
